Development Charges pay for a new amenity in a City and the dollars are gained by affixing a charge amount to the delivery of a building permit. In Woodstock, for a detached home the DC charge is $35,000, but for the next 3 years that number will be cut in half.
The plan would be for the Province Of Ontario to pass along the difference to the participating municipalities, and in Woodstock's case those dollars would be earmarked for a 4th arena or other facets of a new Northeast Woodstock (Cowan Fields) recreation centre, including a swimming pool. By the way, replacing Woodstock's 3rd ice pad does not qualify as the City would de-commission the current 3rd arena at the Civic Centre building at the fairgrounds on Nellis Street.
The Canada - Ontario Partnership To Build plan was to set aside $8.8 billion over 10 years to be directed to municipalities to promote the construction of new homes. The so-called Building Faster Fund in the province was created due to a shortage of homes in all styles -- large houses to small apartments. The deadline for cities to join in on the Canada-Ontario Development Charge Reduction Program was June 19, and City Council approved its motion on Thursday, June 18.
